It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
