It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
