It might seem to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
