It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
