It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
