It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
