It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
