It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
