It might look like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
