It may look to be a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
