It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
