It might seem like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
