It may seem like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
