It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, because I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
