It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
