It might seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
