It may look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
