It might seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
