It might look to be an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
