It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
