It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
