It might look like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I have actually coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
