It may look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
