It may seem to be a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing process ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
