It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I understand the structure of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more productive part of the process now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
