It might look like an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
