It may look like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, also.
