It might look to be a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for another day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
