It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to how I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things till I am drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
