It might look like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, because I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
