It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could speed up his writing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had actually planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each segment would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research process by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
