It may seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off till I’m drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
