It might seem like a simple step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
