It may seem to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re just Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
