It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time because I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking required to complete the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually coined my outline and study process by using this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
