It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new file and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to get a solid working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve actually overhauled my outline and study procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
