It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a strong working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new post I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea about what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I’d set myself up for victory. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
