It may look like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, since I know the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I had actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each section would contain and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow from the article. Though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I had put myself up for victory. Composing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a couple of times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and study process by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, also.
