It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new document and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a strong working title and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same process for every new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and over means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put the draft off for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, also.
