It might look to be a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and a summary before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600 percent by creating a summary first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy to a new file in your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I know the structure of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a good idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I often put these things off till I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have really overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
