It may look like a simple step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by developing a template for the most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the arrangement of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow in the post. Even though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took less time since I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally work, and I was tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking required to fill out the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off until I am drafting, and that’s when I must be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, though, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It is a more effective part of my process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
