It might look like a simple step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working name and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by creating a summary .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to write. Click the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favourite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other well, since I know the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to have the outline done, so I put off the draft for another day.
On the other hand, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a solid idea about what each section would contain and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took more than usual, drafting took less time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put these things off till I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by using this template. It is a more effective part of the procedure now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
