It may seem to be an easy step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a strong working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each gist to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow into each other nicely, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became much more involved. I had actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a few hours simply to have the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow in the article. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different process to the way I normally do the job, and that I had been tempted a few times to prevent the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I must be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by applying this template. It is a more productive part of the process now, and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, also.
