It might look like an easy step. Simply open a new file and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could speed up his composing process ~600 percent by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that’s probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for the common Ghost blog post structure. Since that structure’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file in your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line with a couple of notes about what I should write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other nicely, since I know the structure of the whole piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my outlining process became more involved. I’d actually planned to perform a complete rough draft of that post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to have the outline done, so that I set off the draft for a different day.
On the other hand, I’d over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each segment would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took less time since I’d put myself up for victory. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to complete the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I’m drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I’ve actually coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my procedure now and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
