It might seem like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working title and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his composing process ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I was repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a fantastic chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin with answering each dot line using a couple of notes about what I need to write in that segment. From the time I’m done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, since I understand the structure of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours just to get the outline done, so that I put off the draft for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a good idea of what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had set myself up for victory. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally do the job, and I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to complete the outline correctly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, which is when I should be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, though, and by the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
