It might seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for this to work for me. I like to have a solid working name and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I was repeating the exact same procedure for every single new article I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realized repeating the same work over and over means that’s probably a good chance for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I started by creating a template for my common Ghost blog post structure. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I created a template based on how John constructions his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They’re only Markdown files, so go ahead and save , rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start by answering each dot line with a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it simpler to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other nicely, since I know the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, along with a good idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow in the post. Though outlining took longer than normal, drafting took time because I had put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling it out into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the extra research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It’s a more effective part of my procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
