It might look like a simple step. Just open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to have a solid working title and a summary before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he found he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600 percent by creating an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new article I work on. Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that’s probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create a few templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my most common Ghost blog article structure. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another according to a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They are only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you’re ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of each list to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot line using a few notes about what I need to write in that segment. By the time I am done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes into fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my outlining process became more involved. I had really planned to perform a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours simply to have the outline done, so I put the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, and a good idea about what each segment would contain and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the article. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I’d set myself up for success. Writing the draft was only a matter of taking each chunk of notes out of the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It was quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and I had been tempted a couple of times to avoid the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I must be focused on writing instead. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I’d had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of my process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better function, too.
