It may look like an easy step. Just open a new file and begin typing, right? But it’s rare for that to work for me. I love to get a solid working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could speed up his writing process ~600 percent by creating an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realized I had been repeating the exact same process for every new article I work on. Like any good programmer, I realized repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a fantastic opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for my most common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that structure’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John constructions his posts, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For every template I’ve made a gist to show you what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click on the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy to a new file on your favorite writing app.
With this template, I can start with answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. By the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to enlarge my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow into each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the entire piece beforehand.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I had really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the early hours, but it took me a couple of hours just to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they would work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took longer than usual, drafting took time since I had set myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I had been tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I frequently put off these things till I’m drafting, and that’s when I should be focused on writing instead. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I have actually overhauled my outline and research process by using this template. It is a more productive part of the procedure now and makes drafting easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better function, too.
