It might look like a simple step. Simply open a new document and start typing, right? But it’s rare for this to work for me. I love to have a solid working name and an outline before I write a lot of. John’s written about this before, after he discovered he could accelerate his writing procedure ~600% by producing an outline first.
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same procedure for every single new post I work . Like any fantastic programmer, I realised repeating the exact same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to make some templates for myself.
I began by creating a template for the common Ghost blog article arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to mepersonally, I also created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I respect.
For every template I’ve created a gist to show you what they look like. They’re only Markdown documents, so go right ahead and save them, rename them if you prefer, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to compose. Click on the”view raw” link to the bottom of every list to observe the plain text version, which you can copy into a new file on your favorite writing program.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point with a few notes about what I need to write in that section. From the time I’m done, I’ll have a rough sketch of what the finished piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and cause them to flow to each other well, because I understand the arrangement of the whole piece in advance.
Using the template, I discovered that my summarizing procedure became much more involved. I’d really planned to do a full rough draft of the post in the morning, but it took me a few hours simply to get the outline done, so I set off the draft for a different day.
On the flip side, I’d over 1600 words composed in my outline, along with a solid idea about what each segment would comprise and how they would work together to create a feeling of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than normal, drafting took less time because I’d put myself up for success. Composing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or two.
It had been quite a different procedure to the way I normally work, and that I was tempted a few times to avoid the extra research or thinking required to fill out the outline properly. I often put these things off until I am drafting, which is when I should be centered on writing rather. I stuck to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was grateful I had.
I’ve really overhauled my outline and study procedure by applying this template. It’s a more effective part of the process now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it’ll lead to better work, too.
