It may seem to be an easy step. Simply open a new file and begin typing, right? Nonetheless, it’s rare for that to work for me. I like to have a strong working title and an outline before I write too much. John’s written about this earlier, after he found he could accelerate his composing process ~600% by producing an outline .
As I wrote an outline for a post this week I realised I had been repeating the same process for every single new article I work . Like any good programmer, I realised repeating the same work over and above means that is probably a good opportunity for automation.
So I decided to create some templates for myself.
I began by developing a template for my common Ghost blog post arrangement. Since that arrangement’s particular to me, I created a template based on how John structures his articles, and another based on a writer whose work I admire.
For each template I’ve created a gist to show you exactly what they look like. They are just Markdown files, so go ahead and save them, rename them if you like, and copy-and-paste the contents into a new file whenever you are ready to write. Click the”view raw” link on the bottom of each gist to view the plain text version, which you may copy into a new file on your favourite writing app.
With this template, I can begin by answering each dot point using a few notes about what I should write in that section. From the time I am done, I will have a rough sketch of what the final piece will look like. This should make it easier to expand my notes to fully-formed paragraphs and make them flow to each other well, because I know the arrangement of the entire piece in advance.
Using the template, I found that my summarizing procedure became more involved. I’d actually planned to do a complete rough draft of that post in the morning, but it took me a couple of hours simply to get the outline done, so I set the draft off for another day.
On the flip side, I had over 1600 words written in my outline, and a solid idea of what each section would comprise and how they’d work together to create a sense of flow from the post. Even though outlining took more than usual, drafting took time since I had put myself up for success. Writing the draft was just a matter of taking each chunk of notes from the outline and filling out it into a readable paragraph or 2.
It had been quite a different process to how I normally work, and that I was tempted a couple of times to prevent the additional research or thinking necessary to fill out the outline correctly. I often put these things off until I’m drafting, and that’s when I must be centered on writing rather. I adhered to it, however, and from the time I got around to writing the draft I was glad I had.
I’ve really coined my outline and research procedure by applying this template. It’s a more productive part of the procedure now, and makes printing easier. Hopefully it will lead to better work, too.
